Fox is a music lover, there is no doubt about it. I think discovering what music he enjoys is one of my favorite parts of getting to know him so far. When he’s in a foul mood, the first thing I try (after checking the diaper, of course) is singing or cranking up iTunes on our Apple TV.
When we need to bring things down a notch (or three), my go to sleepy time music is Iron & Wine. Discovered this early on… I think the first week we were home! He (almost always) quiets right down and often drifts off a few songs into Around The Well.
Screaming baby in the car and it’s not nap time? Believe it or not, this kid really responds to dance music. Yep. Discovered this when his howling was silenced upon my iPod hitting Rock Party Anthem on the way home from my sister’s house one day. Since then, I’ve noticed he is fond of Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and even Madge. (That’s right. Loving Madonna is apparently a genetic trait.) SteveKam is silently mortified by this. I am THRILLED. Fox and I have dance parties in the living room most days.
Introducing him to my favorite tunes has gotten me thinking about the music my sisters and I listened to when we were wee. It’s inspired a hunt for some of my favorite children’s songs and records from back in the day.
There’s a Hippo in the Bathtub by Anne Murray
This album includes some of my all time favorites … such as Hey Daddy (There’s A Dragon in the Driveway) and The Teddy Bear’s Picnic. We now listen to this album just about every day – it’s almost surreal since I vividly remember my Mom singing all of these to me.
OBVIOUSLY this was a huge hit in our house. (We’re Muppet junkies.) So far, it’s pretty popular with my little, too.
Little White Duck by Burl Ives
I love when you forget all about a song you loved… and you randomly hear it and it comes rushing back. 🙂 This is one of those.
The Laarge Daark Aardvark Song by Allan Sherman
My sisters and I lived to belt out these lyrics. It seemed to delight my Dad since it was one of his favorite songs from back in his day.
I think next time I am at my folks’ house in Houston, I’ll be digging through the old record collection to see what gems I’ve forgotten.
Well, how about you? What songs stick out in your mind from childhood? Have you hunted them down to share with your wee ones? I bet y’all will jog my memory about some biggies I’ve left out. 🙂
